Spicing up the 404

Forget the 411 buddy, the 404 is where it’s at these days! While custom error pages are nothing new, over the past months I’ve noticed a growing trend of fun and quirky 404 Page not Found designs that I think more companies should consider doing. Let’s face it, broken links happen but it’s best to present your visitors with a more pleasant experience rather than a jarring ERROR!!!!!???? Below are a few examples I’ve come across recently:

IAC Advertising
In this instance I was simply trying to follow an Evite invitation link from my email. While Evite was down for some reason AIC Advertising “invites” me to check out some of their other websites while I wait for traffic to die down. Hmm, not a bad idea. If your servers are down for one site instead of losing your audience all together why not try to navigate them to another site that you at least own?

Others

A personal touch…

My all time favorite!!!
While not a functioning 404 page it’s still pretty fun to watch.

Forming a Community Strategy
After seeing the kind of buzz that can be created among a customer base by community features and social networking, more companies than ever have been interested in incorporating similar features into their internet strategy. The development of a successful community site can aid in achieving business objectives by increasing brand recognition and loyalty, facilitating key processes such as sales and research, and providing a method for active generation of quality content.

But when does the cost of building an online community outweigh the potential benefits? Manifest Digital will explore the potential impact of introducing community features, including effects on a company’s brand and budget, as well as responsibilities the company has to its user base.

Manifest Digital will discuss the considerations that help define a company’s community strategy. In addition, we have created a model that allows for competitive analysis of community features, and a basis for moving from community strategy to feature definition. This includes a discussion of roles, types of interaction, and categories of features that serve as “activity motivators” to encourage the growth of a vibrant community aligned with business objectives.

My Half-Marathon a month plan

As mentioned in a previous post (B-school Bound) , at the start of the year I made a resolution to run a half marathon each month this year. I think I may have been on a runner’s high because that’s just non-sense (at least for me). I very much love to run but being 5 months into the year already if I continue to try doing a half marathon per month I’m going to be burnt out on running all together, especially since I’m marathon training.

Here’s how it’s panned out so far:

January-
Medio Maraton Internacional los Cabos (Cabo san Lucas, Mexico) 2:23:51 (pace 11:00/mi)

February
-
Fly with the Eagles Half Marathon (Marion, IL) 2:27:23 (pace 11:15/mi)

March
-
Shamrock Shuffle 8k (Chicago, IL) 50:25 (pace 10:08/mi)

April
-

  1. The Relay 199 Mile Race (Calistoga in Napa Valley to the beach in Santa Cruz ) 34:04:19 Team of 11 people (I ran 3 legs totaling just about 13mi averaged about 10:30/mi)
  2. Race to Wrigley 5k (Chicago, IL) 31:23:51 (pace 10:07/mi)

May
-
Soldier Field 10 Mile 1:45:57 (Chicago, IL) (pace 10:36/mi)

June-
• 11 mile training run on the 28th (only 2 miles short ;)

July-
• 12 mile training run on the 12th
• 14 mile run two weeks later on the 26th

August-
• Chicago Distance Classic Half Marathon (Chicago, IL) Time to beat 2:36:36 11:58/mi
• 16 mile run in the 23rd

September-
• 18 mile run on the 6th
• 20 mile run on the 20th
• 12 miles on the 27th

October-
Chicago Marathon (Chicago, IL) Time to beat 5:34:13 12:44/mi.

November-

December-

So as you can see…
There’s a few gaps in the above schedule. I count the Shamrock Shuffle 8k only because I’m doing a marathon this year and that’s 2 halfs so I get a month for free ;) As far as May goes, the Soldier Field race was “only” 10 miles but that’s the farthest I’ve ran at that pace ever so I’m not going to harsh myself on the lack of 3.1 miles. Maybe I should change this resolution to a race longer than a 5k each month?! haha.

I’ve also had a hard time finding half marathons close to the Chicago area that are drivable without having to stay overnight. If you have any race suggestions please let me know!

I’ve found that my limit is 5 a hour drive. Back in February my dad and I drove down to Marion IL for the FLy with the Eagles Half Marathon. It was a gorgeous course! I even saw my first bald eagles (hence the name)! We left Chicago at 2am and drove straight through, arriving at 7am and the race started at 8. PERFECT! 1 hour to relax before the race, I’m sleeping! Yeah, I wouldn’t suggest that regime to anyone. I think that’s why I couldn’t beat my time from the month before. It was a great experience though, to run a wooded course on your own without any of your running buddies. Just you and nature, the sound of your feet crunching leaves, birds flying over head, a smile here and there from fellow racers. It was a great test. Can I do this without having familiar faces next to me? I CAN! And I guess that’s the real reason why I wanted to run a half marathon a month. To find out if I can, and I did!

Running 6 miles in the snow is just a little difficult :) But being outside and being able to enjoy the sun makes it SO worth it!

Application Requirements- The scarey & the scarier!

So in order to keep track of the things I need for my school applications I’m making, as I often do, a “To Do” list.

  • Original Transcripts from undergraduate school(s):
    American Academy of Art
    Columbia College Chicago
  • Letter of recommendation (1)
  • Letter of recommendation (2)
  • GMAT Test (550 or higher)
  • Current Resume
  • Statement of Purpose
  • Application Fee (varies per school)

As I feel these things become completed I’ll cross ‘em off…simple! Ha!

Ok, so original transcripts won’t take much more than a letter or a couple of phone calls. The Application fee is going to be easy as well. I also think that getting letters of recommendation from 2 co-workers will be relatively easy but if they need to be from separate areas of my life that might be a touch more tricky, but still nothing I’m too worried about.

What I AM worried about is the rest of it!

Updating my resume, which is about 5 years old, is going to be a pain in the butt. I can’t see that this is terribly crucial however, considering that many grad students come straight from undergad with little to no work experience. I know this is not the case for me, however, it’s not like I’m actually job hunting so I may be able to get away with a light update. I’ve been fleshing out my LinkedIn profile over the past couple of months in anticipation of this so I’ve being working on it little by little.

Slightly more daunting is the statement of purpose. I know why I want to continue my education it’s just a matter of putting all those thoughts down in a very organized, logical, and not-to-mention interesting way. This will just take some time and re-work, and more re-work.

Now, we get to the mother of all pains in the butt…the GMAT. Who’s idea was it to demand standardized tests as a criteria of acceptance anyway? :) I need a 550 or higher for most of the schools and programs I’m considering…sounds attainable since the highest you can get is 800. Plus, I don’t know if you can use an ACT score as an indicator but I got a 26 on that without really trying so I feel like with nose-to-the-grindstone attitude I can get a 600 or higher. I need to take a few practice tests to see where I land at the moment and see where I need to focus most.

I know for a fact, however, that I’m going to need to spend a considerable amount of time brushing up on my Math skillz (that’s right, I busted out the z). I hated math in high school and I’m still not that great at it. Although I am a bit more open to the subject these days as I can now see how it helps to keep you sharp even if you’re not trying to calculate the time that 2 trains will meet if one leaves the station at…

It also won’t kill me to brush up on my writing skills. I’m sure I have horrible grammar habits having been so marketing and design focused these past few years. I feel like blogging has helped a bit even though I still can’t spell worth a lick!

With all that said, maybe taking this GMAT test won’t be so bad. If nothing else it’ll make me stronger in critical thinking (not to mention make me go out and drink less ;)

I’ll keep ya posted once this all gets underway in the coming weeks. Oh, and if anyone has any thoughts, pearls of wisdom, or questions please leave a comment below.

Cheers!!!

B-school Bound

Yep…that’s right. Business school. This is the latest and greatest in crazy ideas I’ve come up with. Second would be my plan to run a half marathon once each month this year. One down 11 to go! But I digress…

Yes, Business school! Why? Why not more design schooling? Because I feel I’ve reached a point in my career in which in order to improve my main skill set of Design I just need to continue to design. Additionally, I feel that improvement in this area will come naturally as I continue to work at my current job. In other words practice makes perfect! And perfect is what I’ll continue to strive for! However, that’s not the skill set I feel I need to strengthen most right now. Instead, I’d really like to expand my business knowledge in general and more specifically, my marketing skills as they relate to brands, eCommerce, New Media, Human-computer interaction etc.

To do this, I realize, I could take various one-off courses that deal specifically with any topic I’d like; but that doesn’t quite hold the same weight that a graduate degree holds. Aside from this more and more people these days are pursuing graduate and post-graduate degrees to advance their careers. Plus, it doesn’t hurt that I LOVE school, always have. (I know…I’m a nerd)

I’m also very lucky. When I was 5 I just wanted to color all day, at 10 I wanted to be an Illustrator, by 12 I discovered Typography and fell in love with Design, and by 16 I had a website (that’s old by today’s standards but for 1996 that’s pretty darn good. As a side note, 1996 is also the year Macromedia first released the WYSIWYG HTML editor Dreamweaver). My point is that I’ve always known for the most part what I’ve wanted to do as far as a career. I’ve had some kind of direction; now I’m just refining and narrowing in on that direction.

I also see this as a way to remain well-rounded. This has also been a life long goal of mine since studying DaVinci, the original Renaissance Man. Most of you will find this saying familiar: Jack of all trades; Master of none. But that’s not how I see it. Conversely, I look to an old Japanese saying that sates, “I have 9 knives and they’re all sharp”. I ultimately feel that having a graduate degree in simply another sharp knife in my drawer.

Why now? There are two main reasons for my timing. One: As I’ve previously mentioned, I’ve reached a point in my career in that only continued experience doing what I do will advance my main skill set of Design. Two: I’ve always had a plan to continue on with school but wanted to have significant real-world experience first. Having at least 5 years of solid experience under my belt has definitely given me insights into what to pursue a Masters in that I otherwise might not have had. Additionally, as I’d like to pursue more higher-level and strategic work that I’m often not looked at for in my current organization, a degree in this area might change some minds.

No matter what specific area I choose, i know this will not be easy no matter how well I’ve done in school in the past. I’d be lying if I said this doesn’t make me nervous.

Create your own Flash Widgets

That’s right! It’s now possible to create your own Flash widgets for your websites without knowing a lick of code. The online application is called Sprout and it’s absolutely amazing, you have to see for yourself. Below is one I was able to create in literally 5 minutes or less. (In case you couldn’t tell by the looks of it ;)

When I have more time I’ll give you a full review.

Till then…Cheers!

Mini Portfolio Site Launch

Hello all! You know for being as internet savvy as I am you sure wouldn’t know it by the looks of this blog or by the fact that I don’t even have my own website (anymore). Well, i just don’t have time to create a site of my own so I like to use tools like Blogger, MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, Twitter, etc. that make it super easy to upload what I want, when I want so I can get on with my offline life :)

Well the latest super easy-to-use web publishing site that I’ve found is for those creative types out there that want to post our work online but can’t stop creating cool stuff long enough to make a site of their own. It’s a site called Carbonmade and it allows users to post 5 projects for free!

The design could definitely be described as a “Web 2.0″ style (clunky, overly cute, and bright!) But it is easy to use. There’s a few things I would have done differently or would love to see tweaked but hey, it’s FREE right?!

The best part is that only took me about an hour to get all the screen captures up and labeled. The hardest part was actually taking the screen captures, and trying to decide what the heck to write. Overall I thought this was great practice for what I’d really like to showcase and a good test run for what I’d like to say about the things I’ve worked on. So often I forget to take a step back and think about what EXACTLY a project was about because you get so close to the work.

So please go check out the site and let me know what you think of my mini-portfolio
