A Leaner Meaner Me

It’s been a long, loooooooong winter folks. And I took full advantage of this season in which most Chicagoans choose to hibernate. FULL advantage.

Well, as most of you non-under-a-rock dwellers know, summer is now in full swing and the thought of wearing most of my bikinis for volleyball thoroughly scares the BaJeebuz out of me!

Just before I was about to wallow in self-pity and help myself to yet another serving of ice cream, wouldn’t you know…as luck would have it my gym was about to start their 2010 Fitness Challenge!

Of course, this is a marketing program to get members to purchase personal training sessions and supplements— but I don’t mind. I already had enough training sessions left over from my marathon training last year. Not to mention it won’t be a big deal to get more especially since I’m going to win the $10,000 grand prize! I also realize, of course, that this is what they want me to think. I bet it was even in the damn creative brief.

Winning will not be easy…but it never is; is it? I’ve gained quite a bit of weight but I’m by no means “The Biggest Loser” material, so my work is cut out for me.

[cue evil laugh]
“Yes! Just the way I like it!”

The rules state that I get a point for every pound of weight lost. It’s not however a weight loss competition. It’s a fitness challenge. That said, I also get 2 points for every pound of lean muscle mass gained. On top of that I have to write a 500 word essay about my goals and how my gym and specifically my trainer were a huge impact on my progress. Of course, another marketing ploy but I get it. I’d want something to publish too if were going to give you $10,000. Lastly there’s the before and after photos! I took mine right after playing beach volleyball all day so THAT’S going to be one awesomely horrible before shot.

The body changes throughout the challenge are all calculated with a hand held fat loss monitor and looking at body fat percentage as opposed to BMI, which can be misleading. Full disclosure, I was the Design Lead on the Omron site redesign but these are also the exact monitors my gym uses…no real relation there but just making sure I’m being transparent.

Along with working with my awesome trainer, Ian, once a week I’ve also decided that I will not be drinking in June. So far I went 5 days straight and then the Blackhawks won the Stanley Cup and while I by no means went overboard, I did have a couple Coronas. BUT so far with just the one training session, really watching what I eat and not drinking I’ve already lost 3 pounds since last Sunday’s weight-in! Only 5 days in, nice!

The challenge runs from June 7 until the end of August. Right now I just want to lose as much fat as possible and gain as much muscle as I can but it’d be great to get back around to 125lbs. I haven’t seen that number since high school though so with more muscle I’d be happy as long as I stop feeling like a slug (oh, and if I could fit in my jeans again. I refuse to go up another size)!

I think one of the main keys to this will be to watch my food intake. I’ve been using an online tool called The Daily Plate for quite some time now (on and off since 2007 actually) and it’s now a part of the Livestrong website. It’s very robust and couldn’t be more easy to use. It tracks both you nutritional intake as well as your fitness activities, weight goals and more. You can also export the data so your trainer can keep you honest.

MyPlate on Livestrong

MyPlate on Livestrong— According to my weight loss goals that I input into MyPlate and my base level of activity I should be consuming 1130 calories. In this example i somehow missed breakfast and then trained later in the day which kicked my butt and I was actually calorie deficient for the day!? This is not good at all. That kind of extreme is not good for the metabolism. I should be consistently aiming for the red line like I did on the 7th & 8th. Had I not been using this tool, I'd have no idea that I actually needed to eat more yesterday.

Other activities I’m weaving into this workout mix include:

  • Biking to work as much as weather and work permits. It’s an 11 mile trek one way and when I was more vigilant about this last year it was supplementing quite a bit of my weekday marathon training runs.
  • Volleyball on Saturdays and Sundays from 9am-4pm every week through VballNetwork
  • Running. Not sure how often or when yet but I’d imagine that my more normal routine of Monday, Wednesday, and long run Saturday would be best even though I’m not running the Chicago marathon this year
  • I miss the yoga classes I used to go to at my gym so I’ll try to hit those up when I can
  • I’m also thinking of adding the P90x routine into my mix but that I know would be overkill on top of all of the above. I’m still curious about it and think I may check it out to sprinkle in some at home workouts if I’m ever bored (bored? what’s that?!)

Looking at all of the above I’m now realizing that I pretty much signed myself up for a second (or third) job. This will not be easy…but again…winning never is.

Thought for the Day: Awards

Looking for Hachi: Reward if Found

I just found out via Facebook that my friend’s sister’s dog has gone missing and I’m hoping that this post will help reach some of you that may live in Chicago.
“My dog ran away the day before yesterday, and we are going out of our minds trying to find him. He was last seen about two miles from our home heading SW…can you please forward to other Chicagoans and look out for Hachi? We particularly need people who live East/West Garfield Park, Humboldt Park, Ukranian Village, West Town, and the Near West Side, since we have been unable to canvass those areas. He may also be in Wicker Park, Bucktown, or Logan Square. If spotted, please call us immediately! He is skittish and will only answer to us.”
If found please call: 202-297-9685

Rant: I’m so SICK of pointless studies

This “report” kinda infuriated me…

Adults with Chronic Disease Often Offline

Ummm YEAH they’re probably NOT online. Why? Because they’re freakin’ sick. Am I online when I’m sick even with a common cold? Ok, well yes I am. But if I was fighting cancer or had to deal with some other disease I’d probably be much more concerned with trying to make my life more comfortable. I’d probably have mounding health care bills and have to give up my fancy iPhone, high speed internet, and such. So yeah. They’re not online. You can’t reach EVERYone via the interwebs. It’s sad; it’s often forgotten that sometimes you have to TALK to people.

End Tirade. Thank you.

Facebook Tip: Hide what annoys you

You: I’m SO sick of seeing posts in my Facebook wall feed from CitySocial this and FarmWorld that.

Me: Yeah, I know…sorry about that but they’re really fun games. Have you…[gets interrupted]

You: NO! Do I look like I have time to play stupid games?

Me: Well you are on Facebook…

I may like to indulge in a little Farmvillle and CafeWorld occasionally but that doesn’t mean that you want to see that I’ve just baked a scrumptious yet imaginary soufflé that is now making you want to run to see if you have ice cream in the freezer.

Well, suffer no more! You can hide updates from applications like Farmville and Caféworld from showing up in your feed by clicking the hide drop down option to the right of the post. You can then either hide that person (Boo!) or the application (Yay!).

Sanity restored.

Facebook Gone Wrong: A quick sample from Nestlé

Late last week Nestlé gave us a great example of how quickly things can get out of control when you don’t stop to THINK about what you’re saying!

How NOT to respond, unless you want a fire fight on your hands…

Status update from Nestlé: “To repeat- we welcome your comments, but please don’t post using an altered version of any of our logos as your profile pic – they will be deleted.”

Notice the box directly under the profile picture…

“Social media: as you can see we’re learning as we go. Thanks for the comments.”

In my opinion, that is not a great way to acknowledge your flub. Considering that Social Media, while maturing, is still in it’s infancy we’re all really still learning (I’m looking at you, “gurus”). One thing that isn’t new however, is common sense and common decency.

How do you think this should have been (or should continue to be) handled. I plan to post an update on this situation soon and would love to hear your thoughts as it unfolds. For more background I recommend taking a look at the source in which I first caught wind of this.

Quick update: Since taking the screenshot above Nestlé’s fan count has jumped to 93,176 fans over the weekend…marketing ploy? Maybe…but I really doubt it.

Running 2010

Well I guess it’s that time again. Time to seriously consider what races I’m going to train for and maybe even more importantly which of those I’m NOT.

For those you you that know me I’ve trained for the Chicago marathon for the past three years (and I greatly thank you all for still being my friends). I think I definitely need a break this summer, heck I could use a break now! Between work, volleyball and the current training program I’m in I have little time for anything else. Take a look…

Current weekly schedule for spring

Tuesday evening is the only night I have to myself right now!

No wonder why I’m so tired all of the time not to mention a persistent pile of clothes to wash! But come summer things should lighten up a little bit especially since I’m NOT training for the Chicago Marathon this year! This summer the focus is going to volleyball first, running second. I do, however, still want to do the Half Marathon training with my running friends from Chicago Endurance Sports but the lower mileage should be much much easier for me deal with. I don’t care what anybody says, an 18 mile run really takes quite a bit outta ya! ;)

Schedule for the summer

At least I'll get home earlier during the week!

Anyways, back to the races I’m running this year. Like I said right now I’m in half marathon training. While I’m not really doing a half for sure yet I know that I AM doing the 199 Mile Relay Race in California the first weekend of May and canNOT wait! It’s a 2 day race with 12 runners each responsible for 3 legs of the race anywhere between 3 and 8 miles per. It’s a little crazy but it’s a ton of fun and I can’t wait to share the pictures and stories with you. The last time I ran this race was 2 years ago already with a great group of folks from Avanade (you know you have great clients when you can spend 2 days running with each other in a stinky van).

January and February were spent getting back into the groove of training having not really run since October’s Marathon. And man has it been a struggle to get back into it. Did you know it’s cold out?!

March brings with it the promise (or tease) of warmer weather, green beer, and of course what’s considered the official start to the running season in Chicago, The Shamrock Shuffle. For last year’s race I remember looking out my window and seeing a heaping pile of freshly fallen snow, thinking “Hell no!” and rolled over to sleep another 3 or so hours. This year however I was determined to not make the same mistake; I didn’t even register. Can’t feel guilty if you don’t even intend to run! Well I ran it anyways and am so glad i did (I’ll admit I feel slightly guilty having not registered but I’ve given Bank of America enough money already). About an hour before the race I texted my co-runner Vanessa to see if she was still running it or not (hoping she’d bail). Running she was! And so I high-tailed it over to pick her up and off we went to freeze pre-race for at least 30 minutes before even crossing the Starting line.

To give you a slight bit of perspective on this race, first you have to understand that 2 days ago it 55º out, it snowed yesterday and this morning it was something like 38º and raining. The other thing about this race I and most other runners I know can’t stand is that they cap registration at 36,000 people on an 8k course. For the marathon the cap is about 45,000 runners! That means that there’s about 5,143 runners per mile. (An 8k is 4.97 miles and a marathon is 26.2 miles!) Ridiculous. But it wasn’t snowing, not like last year! We still complained just about the whole time but in a joking way and all-in-all had a great run.

So that’s it for March; now for the rest of the year:

April-

May-

June-

July-

August-

September-

October-

November-

  • Turkey Trot 8k

December-

  • Hot Chocolate 10k
  • Rudolph Ramble

Wow! What a year it’s going to be!!!! And yes, with all of that running will STILL only be second to volleyball :)

Operation: Manifest Blanket Donation

What do you get when you put together 1 holiday season, 2 SUVs, 4 volunteers, and 180 blankets? If you guessed a warm and fuzzy feeling inside, you’re oh so close! Aside from that you also get Operation: Manifest Blanket Donation. What’s that you ask? It was a whirl wind of a day where myself and 3 other Manifest employees volunteered time out of their busy busy day to trek to a Chicago-area Walmart, purchase, and jam pack 2 cars with box upon box of soft micro-fleece blankets. And when I say jam-packed I’m not exaggerating; take a look yourself…we thought we were going to have to call for reinforcements. In fact, we actually did until we found a few extra crevices for every last blanket (including Liz and Chris’ laps). Why 180 blankets? For the holiday season Manifest donated one blanket on behalf of each of our clients. Great job clients!

Car #1- Ryan Nicholson ponders where on Earth the last boxes will fit

Car#2- Christine Mortensen (me) finds the last nook and cranny

All of this was a coordinated effort on behalf of the organization Ten Thousand Blankets founded by Jeff Leitner for Blanket Week, a crazy ambitious, campaign to collect and donate new blankets to those that need them.

But our Operation didn’t end there. From the store we caravaned to our final destination, The Pacific Garden Mission on the Near south side of Chicago. Since 1877, Pacific Garden Mission has been a refuge for those in the area seeking food, shelter, clothing, medical, and dental care. It’s a great and facility and we’re proud to have done something positive for this community.

You can make a donation to Ten Thousand Blankets as well! Next Week in fact is Blanket Week where they’re looking to donate as many blankets as possible between Monday, March 15 and Sunday March 21, 2010. So you can have that warm and fuzzy feeling too.

To see all of our photos check out the Manifest Facebook Fan Page.

Facebook Strategy: To Fan Page or to Profile?

During the day working at Manifest Digital, I am the happy victim of quite a few “drive by’s”. Last week I got a chance to help out one of our Ux Evangelists, Jason Ulaszek answer a really good question in regards to a current project he’s on.

Should we create a Fan Page or a Profile?

  • Creating a Fan Page is a best practice as users will look for that first over a regular profile page
  • A Fan page adds credibility behind the brand, it appears more official/professional (credible)
  • Fan pages provide valuable reporting features or “insights” such as fan count, the number of interactions on your page each week, the demographics of your fans and more
  • Fans can easily interact with each other via wall posts, discussion boards, etc.
  • Fan pages provide an opportunity to create custom applications hosted on your fan page that visitors can interact with. This also creates an additional visiting attraction to the Fan page.
  • Having a fan page allows you to send messages to your entire FB fan base at one time
  • You can leverage your own personal profile page by sharing posts from the fan page (via the “share” button)
  • A Fan Page allows you to create the Fan Page box/widget for your site, that promotes all of the fan activity on the fan page itself (an example of what this looks like)
